SCREENING OF “CITY OF GOD” IN LIMA, PERU

The film, directed by Fernando Meirelles, tells the story of life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, in an area known as the Cidade De Deus, the City of God. The story is told from the narration of the young photographer, Rocket. The different scenarios of life that make up the wider-story are presented in Pulp Fiction style chapters, complete with on-screen titles for each different story component.

The story covers all the facets of the life, charting the growth of several key members of the gangs from childhood through to young adulthood, with their transformation from young hoodlums to local drugs barons. The final parts of the story focus on the battle within the Cidade De Deus between two different groups, when business and personal matters lead to an unavoidable confrontation. And what a confrontation it is, although details will not be given away here. The result is a powerful telling of life based around real-life events.

In short, this is a superb achievement, and is easily one of the best films of the year, and of the decade so far. Like it’s predecessors, this is the latest film to come out of South America that indicates the emergence of major new talent in filmmaking.
The date is next Wednesday 30th at 6pm at the South America Explorers Clubhouse in Lima, Peru:

C/Piura 135, Miraflores

ADMISSION FEE:

4 soles for members & 8 soles for no-members.

BOCA- RIVER in MAR DEL PLATA

Boca and River, the Argentinean football derby taking place next Saturday in Mar del Plata, comes in as a perfect excuse to leave the heat of the City of Buenos Aires for a couple of days and visit Argentina’s largest beach resort and seventh biggest city in the country.

Mar Del Plata, famous for its casino, its nightlife, and an industrial port full of sea lions will be hosting the big event but it does not come in cheap.

Packages that include flight, accommodation and admission are available for US$450.

If you are lucky, you can still buy your own flight trough Aerolineas Argentinas or Sol Airlines for around US$150 (return).

Bear in mind that you should also add the transfer from/to the airports (around US$10 in Buenos Aires and US$20 in mar del Plata for both ways).

You can also catch a bus for a 6 hour ride for US$50 (return).

Tickets for the game can be found online for around US$70 or you can also by them directly at the Stadium for between US$5 and US$50.If you go for this adventurous option, tickets go on sale on Thursday morning (10 am) and you should be quick. They are expecting to be sold out by the same evening. Those wanting to be on the Boca “popular”, should get their ticket from the South side of the Stadium (Avenida de las Olimpiadas) and those wanting to be on the River “popular”, should go to the North side (calle Canosa).

If you prefer the comfort of your own seat, then tickets will be for sale at the Liga marplatense (Independencia and Colón) for River fans and at the Club Kimberley (Independencia and Alvarado) for Boca fans. Again, from 10 am on Thursday.

Remember that hotels are already fully booked, although you can still find some dorm beds between US$20-US$40 a night. A 5- star hotel would cost around US$200 for a single room.

Although challenging and expensive, the experience would probably be an unforgettable one and it’s worth every peso and minute of your travel time!

CARNAVAL!

Carnivals are one of the most traditional popular celebrations in the history of mankind.

It has probably originated in pagan rituals to Bacchus, god of wine; in the feasts organized in honor to the Apis ox in Egypt; or in the Roman saturnalias, in honor to the god Saturn, lord of sowing and the harvest.

Even though when it comes to South America the most popular carnival is indeed the one taking place in Rio in Brazil, Argentina also offers a good option for a weekend gate away from the city.

During the months of January and February, Gualeguaychú dresses up to offer one of the most expected shows in the area: the Carnaval del País.

Gualeguaychu is located in the Argentine Mesopotamia region, which encompasses the provinces of Missiones, Entre Rios, and Corrientes.

The two hundred and forty kilometers that separate the city of Buenos Aires from Gualeguaychú take only three hours on a bus.

Gualeguaychú is one of those places to visit in a few days, ideal as a getaway from routine. It has a complete hotel and gastronomic infrastructure that turns the city into a classical destination to experiment mini-tourism.

As from 1979, the show of carnival in Gualeguaychú has been performed by a group of entities and, for such reason, the Municipality grants them the concession of the “corsódromo”. Only five out of the ten entities that make up the comission to direct carnival present comparsas: Club Juventud Unida, Club Central Entrerriano, Centro Sirio Libanés, Club de Pescadores and the Tiro Federal de Gualeguaychú.

The responsibility and dedication of the artists participating in this carnival is truly admirable. They start to meet ten months before the corsos in order to establish the first parameters of the comparsa, where the chosen topics, the music and the costumes are discussed.

HOW TO GET THERE:

You can access Gualeguaychú from different places in the country using National Routes 12, 14 and 136. From Uruguay, through the Libertador San Martin International Bridge, which connects this city with Fray Bentos, in the neighboring country (Check the news regarding the “papelera” paper-mill conflict before arriving this way)

From the Retiro bus terminal, City of Buenos Aires, several bus companies leave daily once every one hour and a half, and they take about three hours, approximately, to reach final destination. We recommend you buy the ticket in advance, especially during the carnival season.
You can contact these companies by clicking here
